In line with the global trend of harnessing the spectrum of free use in the context of Wi-Fi’s technological development and its growing need, MINTIC, through the National Spectrum Agency (ANE), has referred to citizens and stakeholders a Public Consultation on free use in the frequency band from 5925 to 7125 MHz.

This Public Consultation proposes as an alternative to consider a 1.1 GHz frequency segment for free use; that is, in the range of 5925 to 7025 MHz leaving 100 MHz of the top of the band subject to the determinations made in the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) study groups and in WRC-23 itself.

According to the National Frequency Band Table (CNABF), in Colombia the 5925 MHz to 6700 MHz segment of the 6 GHz band is primarily attributed to fixed, fixed satellite and mobile services. The 6700 MHz to 7075 MHz segment is primarily attributed to fixed, fixed satellite (Space – Earth) (Earth – Space) and Mobile services. Finally, the 7075 MHz to 7145 MHz segment is primarily attributed to fixed service and mobile service.

The regulatory authority expresses the importance in the country of wireless networks that use Wi-Fi, through which and thanks to them, millions of devices in homes and in companies such as tablets, laptops, cameras, TVs, sound speakers, video game consoles and household appliances, among others, including mobile phones or smartphones connect to the internet, saving costs and work of deploying structured wiring , execution of civil works and other facilities that would be required with wired connectivity, also allowing to provide connectivity to populations where the deployment of fixed telecommunications infrastructure is difficult.

The Public Consultation document presents a very interesting questionnaire, open to the entire general population. The period of the Public Consultation is from 16 December 2020 to 18 January 2021.

We will continue to be attentive to the development of this Public Consultation and the regulatory decisions arising therein.
